Many people ask the question why do I always get tired and sleepy? Apart from the obvious reasons, there are other possible underlying causes. If it goes on for an extended period of time and you can’t put your finger on why, then here are some of the not so obvious causes of tiredness.
Are you always trying to please other people?
This might sound a little daft, but if you have a problem saying ‘no’ when other people ask you to do things, then it is really easy to take on board far too much, and can easily be a reason as to ‘why do I always get tired and sleepy?’ If you find that everyone comes to you to ask for favours, help and generally leans on you, then this could well be the problem. You have to learn to put yourself first, and take on no more than your can healthily handle.
Adrenal fatigue
Are you most sleepy between the hours of 3 – 5 pm? Have you suffered from a fair amount of stress, shocks or major events in the past couple of years? If so, it might not just be that you have become bored at the end of your 8 hour working day, you may well be suffering from adrenal fatigue. If something stressful (or exceptionally good) has happened in your life, it really can have a longer lasting effect than you initially thought, and an afternoon slump is one of the symptoms of adrenal fatigue.
Are you a perfectionist?
It is all very well to want to do everything to the best of your ability, but if it starts having a detrimental effect on your life, then it becomes a problem. It is actually considered to be a form of self abuse and it more likely to be a problem in women than men. It can cause you undue stress and anxiety, therefore leading to feelings of chronic fatigue.
As you can see, these are basically lifestyle caused and related. Each of them is treatable but may well take a lot of effort, especially if it means trying to change part of your way of being. But you owe it to yourself to find out the cause of your fatigue and the longer it goes on, the harder it will be to change anything. Of course, these reasons mentioned are not the only cause, there are thousands of other reasons why you may feel tired. If fatigue is really causing a problem in your life, then you will need to seek external, professional advice to help you find out why you always get tired and sleepy.
